Something broke at 3am. Who fixes it?

We work eleven months a year. The month off comes in pieces.

Which is why something about most server tools bothers me: they are built to tell you. High load. Expired certificate. Suspicious login. The message arrives at 3:14, you see it at 7:40 on your phone, and the next twenty minutes of your day go on working out what it means.

A notification is not help. It is a transfer of responsibility, with a receipt.

We decided to do it the other way round

MAESTRO does not ask. When it finds a suspicious file on your site it first takes a locked copy of everything — files and databases — then moves the file aside, does not delete it, moves it, and only then writes to you.

Everything so far is what works today. The rest of the chain — automatically changing every password anyone could have reached, and repairing what was damaged — we are building right now. We will tell you when it is done, not before; in an article about honesty it would be foolish to open with a promise.

This is the report we are working towards:

Everything is fine. Your site is running.
Last night at 03:14 someone uploaded a file that had no business being there. I noticed it, moved it aside and sorted out the rest. There is nothing urgent for you to do.

Below that comes what has been done, and only after it, what is left for you. In that order, deliberately.

A few rules we keep even when they are inconvenient

Nothing is ever deleted on its own. The file goes into quarantine and comes back with one button, because a false alarm that deleted a working site costs more than a file we will see again tomorrow.

Before we touch anything, we take a locked copy of everything — files and databases. If our own logic gets it wrong, your business is still whole. The password sits in your vault; inside is a note explaining what happened and which files we do not trust.

An email from us about a password or a full mailbox contains no links at all. That exact email is a scammer's favourite. If we train you to click inside it, we are doing their work for them. It says what happened and where in the panel to sort it out — in words.

What we cannot do

If someone reached the deepest level of the machine, no cleanup deserves your trust — the honest answer then is a fresh server, not reassurance. Mail will not move if your provider keeps a port shut, and we will tell you so rather than pretend. And we are new: this is a platform that is months old, not ten years old.

And if you have a system administrator?

Then we are for them.

They will still go over everything — and they should, that is the job. The difference is when. In the morning they open the report, see what was done, check it, agree or disagree, and fix whatever we missed. But they do it over coffee, not at 3:14 in pyjamas, trying to remember the console password.

Nobody takes the decisions away from them. The night simply passed without them.

When we really are not the right choice

When you want to approve every step. MAESTRO acts on its own — that is the whole point — and if you would rather be asked before every move, we will get on your nerves.

And, of course, if those startling early-morning messages have become a habit you rather enjoy.

That is why we are building it — try-maestro.pro.

The goal is not another panel with buttons. The goal is a calmer world. There is enough stress already; technology ought to be taking it away, not adding to it.
