What is pentimento?

Pentimento (Italian pentimento — "regret") is an art history term: a trace of an earlier idea hidden beneath a finished painting — the artist changed his mind and painted over it. Beneath Leonardo's "Virgin of the Rocks," infrared scans revealed an entirely different first composition. That's why we're named this way: this platform keeps redrawing itself — right before your eyes. And Leonardo adds: "When judgment exceeds the work, the work never stops improving."
